In August 2001, members of the Animal Industry Board met to consider a proposed rule that would allow the importation and release of wild mammals to South Dakota. Past rules allowed individuals to import wildlife such as elk and deer, but required operators to keep them securely contained within fences. Since we intend to release foxes to the wild, new provisions had to be added.
Foxes will be imported from Wyoming because there are too few in South Dakota to trap from. Trapping in South Dakota would likely reduce numbers too low to sustain the existing population. Wyoming, however, has a large population that can supply the 30 foxes needed each year for release into South Dakota.
The new rule that was adopted directed the Board to first hold a public hearing and consider public testimony before issuing a permit. Immediately following the meeting, TESF formally requested a permit to release swift foxes. The public hearing to consider our request will likely take place in January, 2002 in Pierre, South Dakota. Persons interested in presenting data, opinions, and arguments for or against the proposed permit are encouraged to do so in person at the hearing or by sending their comments in writing to the South Dakota Animal Industry Board, 411 South Fort Street, Pierre, South Dakota 57501. Written comments must be received before the hearing to be considered in the decision.
