Recently, the Turner Endangered Species Fund and partners including the Turtle Conservancy made restoration history by releasing captive-born Bolson Tortoises in the Chihuahuan Desert grasslands of New Mexico. The species has not been free-ranging in the United States for millennia. Over the next few years, hundreds more tortoises will be released for research purposes to be the foundation for at least two viable populations. The Bolson is finally home again, and on the path to recovery.
